Forgiveness Inventory

The Enright Forgiveness Inventory, the Enright Forgiveness Inventory key, and the companion Enright Forgiveness Inventory manual are now available from the International Forgiveness Institute. There is also a version of the Enright Forgiveness Inventory for Children available.

The Enright Forgiveness Inventory (EFI) has been the measurement tool of choice in forgiveness research for the groundbreaking forgiveness research center at the University of Wisconsin and in many other research applications. A number of these research studies serve as a foundation for recommended clinical practice in the book Helping Clients Forgive: An Empirical Guide to Resolving Anger and Restoring Hope by Dr. Robert Enright and Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons. Some examples include: Forgiveness after the Loss of a Child (Coyle & Enright, 1997), Forgiveness in the Context of Infidelity and Divorce (Reed, 1998), Forgiveness and Cardiac Health (Sarinopoulos, 1999), and a Cross-Cultural Study on Forgiveness in the United States and Brazil (Rique, 1999).

The EFI is an objective measure of the degree to which one person forgives another who has hurt him or her deeply and unfairly. The EFI has 60 items and three subscales of 20 items each that assess the domains of affect, behavior, and cognition toward the offending other.

The Enright Forgiveness Inventory Manual begins with a description of the concept of forgiveness and the process model of forgiving upon which the Enright Forgiveness Inventory is based. The manual then provides administration and scoring instructions, the establishment of validity and internal consistency, national and international norm tables, and a bibliography of forgiveness research articles. The manual also presents evidence of the association between high scores on the EFI and low scores on measures of anxiety (STAI) and depression (BDI).

If you are planning a research project on forgiveness, we are certain that these are the measurement tools that you need. You may order the EFI from MindGarden Inc.  We have provided a link to that website below. Translations in various languages are also available.

We wish you well in your research.
